THE NEW RIVER GORGE AND BRIDGE

PAGE TWO:

We followed a winding, very narrow little road we'd been told about that led us down about halfway into the depths of the gorge

and then curved to go under the bridge itself. There were a series of pull-off areas and I got out of the car and started to walk from

one of these to another and another, taking pictures as I went.

Looking down the slope I was walking along the side above.  It was ever so MUCH steeper than it looks in the picture.

In this one you can see (barely) our green car. It's still at the first pull-off with Carl in it and if you look

straight up from the third big rock from the left you can see the light reflecting off it in the distance behind

the small trees.

Getting ever-nearer to the bridge, I'm still walking along.

My attention was caught by a bright blue porta-potty that had been pushed down off a pull-off.

Another porta-potty ....

In the upper left corner is the one from the picture above this one and in the center of this picture but waaaay

down the slope is yet another, with its blue faded because I guess it's been there a while and no one really

wanted to go down there to get it!

Going under the bridge. You can see the top of the arch which lets you know how high above the bottom of the gorge I still am.

I loved all the huge rock formations. These also enabled the construction of the bridge in the form it has.

Once under the bridge I just kept on walking, with Carl now driving very, very slowly to my right.

Note the huge rocks through the trees.

Some of the huge rocks looked almost like towers of buildings. A lot of rock climbing is done here.

I passed a man who was just getting ready to ascend this one.

Looking across the gorge on the western side of the bridge.

The man is in the blue helmet just to the left of the white sign.

Carl, following me still...

This one I  took out the windshield.

Back up on 19 and crossing the actual bridge.

Looking west from the bridge, taken out my side window as we crossed. The guardrail keeps one from seeing the view well.
