FLORAL CLIPART
CEANOTHUS: (see uh NO thus)
When in California it's often called a California lilac

I'm beginning with a picture of part of the ruins of St. Dunstan-in-the-East, just a couple of blocks north of the Thames and west of the Tower in
London, because that is where I first became aware of ceanothus. St. Dunstan's is a roofless Christopher Wren church that's been made into sort
of a little park. I stumbled upon it in late May of 1977 when the ceanothus were in full bloom. I spent quite a few happy moments going all through
the ruins taking pictures and later did a painting from one of them. I had no idea what the masses of bluish-purple flowers were that draped every
wall and glassless window, but I came upon a very, very English elderly gentleman there and asked him if he knew. On an envelope he wrote the
word ceanothus for me, an envelope I still have in a scrapbook.
