In spite of his pain, he gave her his usual charming smile and his most sincere, penetrating blue gaze. "You won't be needing that rifle, Miss," he said, as they pulled their horses to a stop in front of the porch.
"Who are you, and what do you want?" Lacey hadn't put down the rifle. She wasn't trusting them yet.
Wade noticed her finger pressing the trigger slightly. Ready to pull it the rest of the way at a half-second's notice. Her brown eyes were alert and taking in everything about the two men in front of her.
"Name's Ben. Ben--Warner," Wade told her, again with his most disarming smile. "I'm a rancher from a 'ways west of here. This is my foreman, Jim Greer." He indicated the other man, who smiled and nodded, staying alert for anyone else who might show up.
"We were headed toward town with my herd, and some rustlers jumped us early this mornin'. Back over the hill there." He nodded in the direction from which they had just come.
"My men managed to fight 'em off, but in the thick of things I got hit." He moved his black coat aside to show her the blood which was now staining his vest, as well as his shirt. "I'd appreciate it if you could give me some help, miss." That charming smile again, in a face which had become slightly more pale.

Himself, Terry
and Bud surrounded the embedded Biebe. The sheriff was in a most awkward
position, sort of half-sitting atop the blowhole, left leg straight out in front
of him, right leg nowhere to be seen. His arms were stiff as he braced himself
on the rocks.
"John!" Himself said with great concern as he squatted and
lay a hand on Biebe's shoulder. "Are you injured?"
"I...I'm not...sure," Biebe gasped between clenched teeth. "L...leg's
completely...down...."
"Let me have a look," Terry said quietly, moving around to Biebe's other side.
After a moment, he sighed. "Completely wedged."
"Like Pooh," Ando offered. "A wedged bear in a great tightness."
"Some...somehow...I don't think...depriving me of honey will...really be
much...help, Ando," Biebe managed with a pained grin.
"But that's an idea!" Terry spoke up.
"Not feeding Biebe honey's an idea?" Buggie snapped.
"No, that story. In the story Rabbit goes to the other side of the hole Pooh's
stuck in and tries to push from there." His eyes began to scan the darkness.
"Maybe there's some way, some other way, and we can get inside the blowhole?"

Nash from going over Niagara Falls, Sid's attempt to foil the filming of Cinderella Man,
seagull plots, broken hearts in moonlit parks, life in the bowels of a computer, a visit to The
Village/Signs/Twister/Legends of the Fall and more all together with all Russ' characters
(plus Juba), Sid as Clark Kent, plot devices, potty training, campfires, large vats of melted
chocolate, Sponge Bob, giant bats, a train wreck in deep snow, tiger cages, triage in the
Night Owl, eagle plunging, ocean crossing, Russ' Mum's muffins, the attempt to film
'Eucalyptus' and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad thing Sid does to the General,
death and even, alas, a bit of dismemberment, tracking down the wandering, anguished
Bud, rolling off Ayres Rock, blindness and snakes both at the same time, living at Russell's
on the Wharf in Sydney, bridge climbing, time travel, birthing in strange places, arrests in
the Opera House, kidnapping, pigeons, and evil Prime Ministers...and that's not the half of it.
Maybe 2/5. But definitely not a full half.
