CHARACTER INDEX

Atonia’s characters:

Ed Hoffman, a true southern gentleman. He married a woman from New England named Cassy. They will have two children a daughter in college (USC,  and a son “frittering away his education” (Andy). He has also taken on the job as guardian for his niece Kathy since her parents were killed in a plane crash off Hilton Head Island. He’s stubborn, set in his Sandhurst ways but highly intelligent. He’s a decorated former military man, Citadel graduate, and now retired from the military,  devoted husband and keeper of the Sandhurst history. He loves his dogs, loves to hunt quail in season, of course. He still owns the original plantation, now a ruin, but used for  outings and for quail hunting located about ten miles inland. They have  the oldest house in Sandhurst one block off Main Street. Cassy has the local antique shop.

Max Skinner – Banker. He’s been banished to Sandhurst from Savannah where he did hold a high paying and high profile position at the Bank of Georgia in Savannah. He’s independently wealthy thanks to this family’s hard work. He’s educated “up north” and is well traveled. He lives in a nice house in Savannah on Jackson Square. His Uncle Henry Skinner owns the property where the Bank of Georgia is located in Savannah and also is a partner in the bank. He saved Max’s ass by sending him to Sandhurst. Max, meanwhile, made a killing in the stock market. He has a girlfriend, Sonya,  who sometimes lives in and sometimes lives in her apartment overlooking the Savannah River. She has a penthouse on top of the Omni where she works as an event coordinator. He’s been rather a bad boy and Sandhurst is his punishment.

Terry Thorne- Terry lives and works on an outlying  island where he bought property from Robin Longstride and built a house. The Island  is part of Sandhurst County but is mainly owned by Longstride.  Terry and his partner Dino run a K&R business. They have an office in town Dino calls a storefront but the real work is done on the island. Dino lives in a rather dilapidated  house in Sandhurst he keeps threatening to redo. Terry is divorced. Dino never has married.

Robin Longstride – is a naturalist. He lives on his island on the ocean side and  his property is a natural refuge for sea birds and sea turtles. He lives a simple and uncomplicated life with his lover and friend, Mary. By trade he is an artist, author and tile setter, not your bathroom floor but something special on the wall inside or out. He’s been in the area for about  ten years and only now branching into Sandhurst to work on the renovations taking place. He's not totally sold on the idea of one man owning so much of a town and its future and  is not afraid to voice his opinion. The Savannah Times editor knows him well.

John Biebe is the acting  town and county sheriff. Acting because an election has not been held since the existing sheriff was killed during a drug bust. He has a lot on his plate. He works long hours and his work takes him away from his family. Donna and his two boys Michael and  Josh live in a sub-division  just inside the county line toward Savannah. There are problems between John and Donna and their marriage might not make it. It's not a happy home right now. Donna is going to run for the school board when the election comes up.

Jack Aubrey = retired from the Royal Navy has made his home on a farm between Sandhurst and Savannah. The property came to him through a friend and fellow sailor who was dying and rather than  lose the land altogether he sold it to Jack for what he owed on it.. A river dissects the land giving him access to the sea when he wants it. And he does want it. He and an American sailor along with a Canadian  bought a run down marina in the Bay of Sandhurst. It is now a thriving business. His farm contains a herd of cattle and several greenhouses and fields of flowers for market. He has yet to marry the girlfriend of his friend who sold him the farm where she lived. She moved out of the main house into one of the cottages and  remained on the property looking after her flowers.  They are in the process of falling in love.

Alex Ross – Reporter for the Sandhurst Gazette, a new local paper that’s been gaining support among the residents of Sandhurst. Alex was a sports reporter in Atlanta who came to the coast and stayed. He was running from a relationship gone bad. He also sent pieces to Savannah and they published when it suited them to. He is a middle east war vet. Sports mad, he spends his spare time down at the local pub watching games and making bets. He’s bought a condo out near the marina in a new complex . His big break came when the former sheriff was killed in a drug bust. Biebe has used him in a stake out and he’s not above spying if he can get a story out of it.

John Nash – Brilliant but flawed with an illness. He was a Harvard Graduate, Rhodes Scholar and now teaches at Liberty College in Savannah. He couldn’t handle the larger universities. He works where he is known, where his strangeness is tolerated and at  times loved. He’s bought one of the old Victorian homes on Okatie Street and has moved in though the renovations are not complete. He has birds for pets. He lives alone although his sister visits frequently from Columbia, SC. He’s harmless to himself and  to others but people can be cruel sometimes.

John Cristofuoro – His wife has passed away and  he took off driving from upstate NY. He’s yet to stop any length of time. But he’s tired, he’s hurting. He needs a new direction. Will his car break down in Sandhurst? Will Biebe step in to help him and in turn will he help Biebe at the police station?

Johnny Devlin (Original =Depp) He is an international movie star. Correct that, he’s an actor. That’s the way he’ll say it. He’s from Kentucky originally before he became household name. He’s quirky and shuns the Hollywood  scene. He’s buying up the old theater in town. Going to refurbish it and start a community workshop. He’s staying in Savannah right now but word has it he’s bought a house on the beach,  a tear down that he’s going to rebuild. You’ll find him in the coffee shop reading, writing and talking on his IPhone. He’s even been seen on the sidewalk playing his guitar with the case open. He’s not recognized here at least so far. That’s how he likes it. He’s a loner unless you interest him.

She’s never married but writes erotic poetry and is herself a rather eccentric person. She has had a relationship with Cal McAffery. She is an expert on folk dances and has on occasion given an impromptu on Main Street.

Steve Moran – lives in the same condo complex that Alex does. He’s recently moved to Sandhurst from Savannah where he broke up with his girlfriend. He's a professional photographer with a tiny studio in Savannah where he photographs mostly barefoot sweet-faced southern children. He longs for something else and has worked with Alex on occasion. You can find him down at the Sandy Conch Pub…most anytime he’s not working.

Jim King (Aka Kingsley – Clint Eastwood)  Spent 25 years in prison for robbery. He’s been out two years and bought into the marina with Jack and another man from Canada. He’s been honest about his background to a point. He never told anyone about the money and those that knew about it are all dead now. So far no one has questioned where he got the money to buy into the marina. He’s divorced and  is about to find out he has a son 27 years old. In jail. Layne's Characters:

Ben Wade-Ben bought up most of the town of Sandhurst 8 years ago on a whim.  He was born & raised in Georgia, loves the state and loves history.  He's made all his money by stealing it, which almost nobody knows about and definitely no one in town.  Up to this point, he's spent very little time in Sandhurst and isn't planning on staying this time.  But things like the election and maybe Katharine will keep him in town.

Richie Roberts- attorney who moved to Savannah from New Jersey a couple of years ago. Handled mostly criminal defense cases up until now, but will be branching out a bit.  Trying to get custody of his son, Michael.  That's one of the reasons he moved to Sandhurst.  Thought it would be seen as a quieter, more appropriate place to raise a child.

Maximus- originally from Rome, but has lived in the US since his early 20's.  He's history professor at Liberty University. Works with John Nash and has one of the old houses in the historical residential section of town.

Cal McAffrey- Editor of the Sandhurst Gazette & Alex Ross' boss.  Cal moved to Savannah after he was shot and almost died while digging into a political scandal at the Washington Globe.  Now wants to live a quieter life. He found out about the job in Sandhurst from Grace Connors with whom he had a relationship in Savannah.  He's bought a smaller house in Sandhurst, but he's a little uncomfortable with living in the same small town with her.

Cort-  runs the stables and riding trails in town.  Cort's a little mysterious.  No one knows where he's come from or very much about him. Ben owns the stables, but doesn't know much about him either, which bothers Ben.

Zack Grant- Zack's an FBI agent who'll drop into/out of town occasionally, working on federal cases.  He suspects Ben, but can get nothing on him.

John Brennan-I'll add Brennan to the mix after The Next Three Days opens in November and I have a good grasp of his character.  He may be a professor, but at the moment, I'm kinda waiting to see how his character turns out at the end of the movie.

Judge Reed Marshall-(original RC character)-45 yrs. old. He's just been made Chief Judge in the Southern District of GA U.S. federal court.  Graduated from Harvard Law School and he's the fifth generation in his family to be a lawyer.  Known to be a brilliant lawyer & very dedicated to the law, but he's far from perfect.  Behind the scenes he knows some not-so-savory characters like Ben Wade.  And when it comes to women he makes Richie look like a novice.

Ross Mathis (Christian Bale)-a prosecuting attorney that Richie will go up against at times.  He'll work mostly in Savannah, but he's buying a house in Sandhurst to get away from the city and an ex-wife.

Nick Godfrey (Mark Strong)-U.S. Marshall assigned to provide protection to Judge Reed Marshall. He lives on the judge's property.

Laura & Lucas Richmond-sister & brother who run the new bookstore in town. She's 25 & he's 27. They've recently moved from Atlanta.

Cain Richmond-Lucas & Laura's grandfather.  In constant trouble with the law for small things like public drunkenness, he's followed them from Atlanta because they're his only living relatives.

Katharine Elizabeth Sandhurst Hoffman-24, just finished college, but she's not sure what she wants to do.  She's not interested in being a teacher, but not sure what else she can do with a degree in English and Psychology, so she's helping her aunt Cassy out in the antique shop for the time being.  She's rebellious against her Uncle Ed, thinking he's too old-fashioned and restrictive.

Isabelle Lawrence-a part-time student at Liberty College who lives in Sandhurst and works as Richie's assistant.  Her parents live in Savannah and she hates that they're so overprotective of her, so she's moved to get away from them.

Lauryn Davis- a first-year law student at Liberty, who's very passionate about a career in law.  She's from a poor family in Savannah, attended college on scholarship and will be attending law school on financial aid as well
