Early Days
(Directly continued from And Then There Were Four)
By Beej
"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine…"
The rich baritone voice enveloped her like warm honey. Lying perfectly still, she cracked open an eye to watch her beloved.
"You make me happy, when skies are grey…"
Jake was walking slowly up and down by the open window, cradling his daughter while his son slept blissfully in the double crib.
"You’ll never know, Bubbs, how much I love you…"
Angie smiled when Jake changed the words of the song, then gasped quietly when she realised that he was walking without his crutches.
Jake realised that Angie was awake and turned, smiling, to shuffle towards the bed.
"Squidge over, Angel," he said as he neared her side, easing himself down as she made room for him, lifting the doona to give him access to the bed.
"Is everything okay?" she asked.
"Sunshine here was a bit antsy. I thought it was better to give her a cuddle before she woke Tai."
Angie arranged the pillows behind her before holding her arms out for her daughter. She settled Nyree to her breast before looking over at Jake.
"We’ve only just got home and she’s got you twisted round her little finger already hasn’t she," she grinned.
"And I’m loving every minute of it," Jake replied, kissing both his ladies. "With any luck she’ll be fed before Tai wakes up," he grinned, crossing his fingers.
Nyree had just been winded when Tai began to grizzle for attention. "Perfect timing," Jake said, getting slowly out of bed to bring his son to his mother.
The baby exchange was pretty neat, and Tai was soon feeding greedily from his mother's breast while Jake did the honours and changed Nyree before settling her down in the crib again.
As soon as he’d changed Tai, he was back in bed cuddling Angie.
"I can never thank you enough for the wonderful gift of our children," he said, kissing her soundly.
"I think I may have had a bit of help, stud," she grinned in reply. "Jake, can I ask you something?"
"Anything, Luv."
"Just where did you rush off to before the ambos arrived to take us to Grafton yesterday?"
"Ah, I went up to the rise."
"Where your grandfather is?"
"Yeah. It’s our sacred place, Angel. I needed to bury the placentas in a sacred place."
"Of course. I’m glad. Tradition is important."
"I never realised you thought much about it until you refused to give birth in the house."
"I didn’t realise myself, baby. When I felt them coming I just knew I should do it right."
"I love you, Angeline."
"I love you, too, Aaron."
They rested against the piled up pillows and glanced over to the crib, which was bathed in moonlight.
"We did good, don’t you think?"
"I would say so. You did good earlier as well. Did you realise you didn’t have your crutches?"
Jake grinned and replied. "I had them when I got out of bed, but had to rest them on the rocker when I went to pick Sunshine up, then I guess I was just too busy to realise I didn’t have them. I was in serious cuddle mode."
"Darling, I’m thrilled, but tell me something…are we going to have to rethink her names?"
"What do you…ah, I understand. No, I think we can keep the ones we chose, she’ll just be our little sunshine as well."
"It was a nice way to wake up. You don’t sing enough."
"I’ve got a good excuse now, loads of lullabies every day."
They settled down to get a bit more sleep before the sun came up.
Sam balanced the tray in his left hand while he softly knocked on the door. Opening it gently, he stuck his head in the bedroom and smiled. Angie was fast asleep in the king-sized bed, but Jake was in the cane rocker, a baby in each arm, humming softly as he rocked gently back and forth. He looked up and smiled at his uncle.
"G’Day, Sam," he whispered. "What ya got there?"
Sam went over to the dresser and put the tray down before walking over to Jake to relieve him of one of his bundles.
"I thought first day back with the little ‘uns, you could both do with brekkie in bed," he whispered back as he laid Tai down in the crib and turned back to take Nyree to allow Jake to get up.
"Ta, mate. That’s a nice thought. Give me a sec and I’ll get back under the doona," Jake smiled.
Angie stretched and realised that she was alone in the bed. She sat up, yawning, and looked around the room, spotting Sam first, then the tray, and finally Jake, who was getting up from the rocker.
"Good morning," she said sleepily. "What time is it?"
"No idea, Luv," Jake replied as he joined her under the covers. "Sam thought we deserved brekkie in bed."
Sam smiled, lifting the tray to take it over to them. "It’s a little after 8:30. How much sleep did you get?"
"Quite a bit actually. The kids have been kind to us, but I’m guessing that won’t last. They had a feed at about midnight."
"I fed them again at 6:00 with the milk you expressed, darling."
"Well, here’s hoping they sleep long enough for you to eat," Sam smiled. "Mind if I join you?" he asked, pulling the rocker closer to the bed.
"Of course not. Is Emily up yet?"
"No, Angie. I think the excitement of having you and the babies home safe got to her more than she wants to admit. She was still sleeping when I looked in on her earlier."
They almost managed to finish their meal before the babies began to wake. Sam smiled as he got up and walked over to the crib. "Which one ya want first?"
"How about the one that’s squirming the most," Jake laughed.
Sam came back over with Nyree and handed her down to Angie, who sat up against the bank of pillows Jake had set behind her and began to loosen her gown.
"Um, I’ll just go wait outside," Sam stammered.
"Oh ,don’t be silly, Sam," Angie replied taking Nyree in her arms and wrapping a lace shawl around them both. "You see, I’m not flaunting my body, I’m feeding my child. We’re on a farm, Sam; it’s as natural as the livestock."
"Angie, honey, you aren’t livestock," Sam replied, grinning as he realised that Angie was trying to put him at ease.
"While we’re up here it’s something everyone is going to have to get used to. I’m not going to hide myself away every time my babies want food."
Sam leaned over Jake and kissed the top of Angie’s head. "I’m sorry, baby girl. I’ll just sit with Tai until it’s his turn at the milk bar."
He ducked just in time to avoid the pillow that was aimed at his head.
"Hey…should you be doing that while you’re feeding?" he laughed, picking up the pillow and placing it behind his head as he rocked Tai.
Everyone burst out laughing, and even the twins gurgled as if they were joining in. Jake took his daughter from Angie as Sam handed Tai over to her, and walked with his uncle over to the changing mat. Sam declined the invitation to change his great niece telling Jake that was a father's job. Jake punched him playfully on the shoulder and got on with the business of being a dad.
"Good morning, Great-Grandma," Jake giggled as he kissed Emily. "Did you have a good sleep?"
"I did, thank you, Aaron. I have to say I’m not pleased with your uncle for not checking when I didn’t get up at my usual time, though."
"He did, Emily, but you were fast asleep. It must take it out of you having another generation in the house."
Emily tried to look angry, but she was too happy to keep it up for very long. "Aaron, I don’t think I’ve been this happy for years. I admit that I was very tired when I went to bed, but it was a good tired. Thank you, darling, for being up here for the birth."
"Hey, this is my home. How could we have the babies anywhere else?" he replied, hugging his grandmother tightly. "Now, may I do the honours and get you something to eat?"
"It’s a bit too late for breakfast, darling."
"Okay, sit down and I’ll put the kettle on. I’ll get you a cuppa and some bikkies to keep you going until lunch."
"Have you and Angeline eaten?"
"Yeah. Sam brought us brekkie in bed this morning. He and Will are seeing to dinner tonight as well, so I guess I can do lunch. It will give you some time to spend with Angel and the twins."
"Thanks you, darling. I’d like that very much. Is she all right this morning?"
"More than all right in my opinion," Jake smiled. "I told her to stay in bed until lunch. She needs the rest. I’m on baby changing duty today."
"That’s good, darling."
"Gran, I need to ask you something."
"You only call me Gran when it’s serious. What’s wrong?"
"Is it normal for Angel to be producing so much milk already? She has way more than the babes can drink and has been expressing it so I can do some bottle feeding."
"It’s a good sign, darling. Her body will settle down soon. It knows there are two mouths to feed. I’m glad that there’s enough to store. You deserve the joy of feeding your children."
She got up and kissed him before taking the tea he offered.
Jake raided the cupboard and took his mug of tea, and a packet of TimTam’s into his den. He had calls to make.
"Good Morning, Aaron Mitchell’s office."
"G’Day, Star. Keeping my seat warm?"
"Hello, Jake. I was just sorting out the mail when you called. I switched your phone through to Jenny’s desk. I’m keeping it warm for her until she can tear herself away from the babies."
"That’s what I was calling about. She’ll be back on Monday, so can you hold the fort until then?"
"For sure. I’m happy to. When do we get to see the twins, Jake?"
"Well, you can either come up here for the weekend or wait until Angel is up to the trip down. I can get Jim to fly you and Drew up on Friday arvo if you like. He’s due to come up and get Jin, so I’m sure he’ll be happy to have some company."
"Oh, Jake! We’d love to!"
Jake grinned as he could imagine Star bouncing up and down on Jenny’s chair.
"Okie dokie then. I’ll give Jim a call and he’ll arrange a time with you. Come as early as you want. I’m sure the gang can cover for you."
"Thanks, Jake. We’ll see you on Friday."
"Okay, Doc. What’s the verdict?"
Drew smiled as he turned away from the twins and saw Jake beaming at him.
"They’re grand, Jake. You both did a wonderful job."
"Hey, Angie did all the hard work. Come to think of it, she did most of the work at the conception too."
Drew slapped Jake on the shoulder as they both laughed, but he remembered that Jake was still almost totally incapacitated nine months before. The twins were truly a gift from the gods.
"So, when are you bringing them down to the city?"
"Not too sure, mate. Angie doesn’t want to fly down with them as she thinks they’re too young, and she doesn’t want me to drive either."
"Catch 22 situation then."
"Yep. To be honest, I’m happy to stay up here for a bit, but I do need to get back to work sometime. I’m thinking that if I can’t persuade Angie it’s okay to fly, we’ll most likely take it slow driving down the coast. Kev can take shifts at the wheel."
"I’ll have a word with her if you like, but being a nurse she should know that as long as they don’t have any snuffles or the like, the flight should be fine. You’ll both arrive a lot more refreshed as well."
"Ta, mate. I’ll take you up on that when the time comes. Three doctors telling her everything will be fine should do the trick, and if Emily doesn’t want to take a trip, I’ll hijack Sam and Will. Then she’ll have a medic on board."
The men grinned at each other and went back to cooing over the twins. The babies were doing a good job of stealing everyone’s hearts.
The weekend was over in a heartbeat, and Jenny, Star and Drew were soon saying farewell to the new parents.
"Set up the video conference for Tuesday, Jin," Jake reminded her, "and I’ll speak to everyone then. Tell everyone we should be back in a couple of weeks and they’ll get to meet the little ones as soon as we can arrange it."
Kisses all round, and Sam set off to the airport. Jake and Angie hugged each other as they waved until the car was out of sight down the drive, then turned back to the house and their precious babies.
